Mariek E. Schmidt

Associate Professor

Dr. Mariek Schmidt is a volcanologist and igneous petrologist with research interests that span both Earth and Mars.  Dr. Schmidt began her research career at Oregon State University, where she mapped and developed the volcanic history of North Sister Volcano in the Oregon Cascade Range.  She expanded to Mars for a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, where she was a collaborator on the Mars Exploration Rover, focused on the igneous and alteration histories of basaltic volcanic rocks encountered by the Spirit rover.  Her research is now 50-50 split between the two planets with Earth-based investigations into the histories of volcanic fields in Oregon and New Mexico and Mars-based research on Martian meteorites and rover landing sites.  She is a Participating Scientist on the Mars Science Lab mission and a member of the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) instrument team.

Mars:

  • Petrogenesis of Martian basalts, including shergottitc meteorites and those observed by the Spirit Mars Exploration rover in Gusev Crater.
  • Alteration and volcanic history of the Columbia Hills, Gusev Crater.

Earth:

  • The deep crustal history of mafic and evolved rocks in the Cascade Arc.
  • The volcanic and alteration history of subglacial and subaqueously erupted volcanic rocks.
