Gifts in Kind

The Brock University James A. Gibson Library welcomes donations of books, journals, archival materials and other items that support the teaching and research needs of the University. Such donations enhance the collection and support our commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching.

How to Donate Material

We encourage those interested in donating materials to prepare a list of titles and include for each item: author, title, publisher, and date of publication. Please send the list to one of the contacts below. Donors may also check the Library catalogue to determine whether the Library already owns the material.

The Library generally accepts gifts of scholarly materials such as journals as they relate to the curriculum, and art, science, and literary works. Materials not usually accepted, however, include duplicates, photocopies, textbooks, and materials in poor condition.

If your gift is accepted, we will discuss the transfer of your donation to the Library. If your proposed gift is not accepted, attempts will be made to offer alternate suggestions for your donation.

How we process your gift

When your gift is received, an appraisal will be done to determine its fair market value. Gifts valued at more than $1000 are assessed by an independent appraiser; gifts valued at less than $1000 are appraised by experienced Library staff.

Donors are required to sign the document entitled Donations-In-Kind Preliminary Checklist. This is an official document used by the University Administration for all gifts-in-kind to establish whether they are eligible for income tax receipts.

Please note that it may take several weeks to process your donation. Donations received after November may not be evaluated and receipted until the following calendar year.

A commemorative bookplate bearing your name, city of residence and the date of the donation, is affixed to all items kept by the Library.
