Matthew Royal is a music theorist with an interest in theories of rhythm, specifically as they apply to 16th- and 17th-century music.  At present, his research is focused on the rhythmic theories of Francisco Salinas and Marin Mersenne, and how these intersect with modern research on rhythm perception. Dr Royal has presented papers at the annual meetings of The Society for Music Theory, The Society for Music Perception and Cognition, The International Society for Music Education, and the Canadian University Music Society.  He has publications in the following journals: The Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Music Perception, The Council for Research in Music Education Bulletin and Psychology of Music.  At Brock, Dr Royal teaches courses in music theory, music cognition and music appreciation.
