Hispanic and Latin American Studies (Spanish & Portuguese)

Bienvenidos / bem-vindos / welcome to Hispanic and Latin American Studies.

Formerly Spanish and Portuguese, the Hispanic and Latin American Studies program offers a range of courses that focus on the rich and diverse Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking cultures of the Iberian Peninsula and of Latin America. Our program endeavours to train students in linguistic competence and cultural literacy vis-à-vis the Hispanic world. Students may take language courses form the absolute beginner’s level to advanced level courses in Spanish, and may complement their Spanish language and culture studies by participating in a study-abroad program through International Services. Our program includes courses on Hispanic linguistics, Hispanic film, Hispanic culture and civilization, Iberian colonization, and women in the Hispanic world, among others.

Spanish and Portuguese – Languages of the Americas and of the world: In total numbers, more people speak Portuguese as a native language than German or French—totalling some 170 million—, while native speakers of Spanish outnumber native speakers of English by about 10 million. In North America Spanish is a major language, and Hispanics have become the most important minority for our neighbour to the south, comprising over 15% of the US population or more than 50 million people. Canada also has a number of important immigrant communities from the Hispanic world, and the Golden Horseshoe region is home to many people of Chilean, Brazilian, Colombian, Argentine, Salvadoran, Spanish and Portuguese descent.
