We are delighted that you are contemplating studying French at Brock University. French is a language spoken by more than 300 million people worldwide as a first or second language. It is an official language in 33 countries around the world and it is the only language other than English spoken on five continents. It is an official language of the United Nations and a large number of international organizations. 56 countries are members of the International Organization of La Francophonie. French is the mother tongue of approximately 7 million Canadians (22.7% of the population), while about 5 million consider themselves bilingual in French and English. Ontario’s Francophone population numbers approximately 550,000 people. The Niagara Region has a very active Francophone community. Welland, a city in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, is one of the few communities in southern Ontario where the percentage of Franco-Ontarians exceeds the overall provincial average. The French Section of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Brock University is interested in all the diverse aspects of the Francophone world. Many of our students have enjoyed exchanges in France or Quebec. French language cultural activities are available through the Club de français. Regardless of your background in French, we have courses to meet your needs. Studying French at Brock

The Department aims to provide students with a thorough and comprehensive coverage of spoken and written French, its literature and culture. In addition to the courses taught in French, the Department offers a series of courses taught in English (designated SCLC) that may be acceptable for credit toward a degree in French.

Programs include the BA Honours degree (single or combined major), the BA Pass degree (single or combined major) and the Minor in French. Single major degrees concentrate on French studies, while combined major degrees allow the combination of a French major with a major in another discipline. The Minor is especially attractive for students in other disciplines who take a number of French courses outside their major programs.

Summer Language Bursary Program: The Department favours and facilitates participation by students of French at all levels in Spring/Summer French immersion programs offered in France and Québec. 

Concurrent Education:  The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the Faculty of Education co-operate in offering a five-year Concurrent Education program combining a BA (Honours) degree and a BEd degree for students interested in teaching at the Intermediate/Senior level (grades 7-12).
