It is with deep sadness and grief that we share with you the news of our dear colleague Marlene's passing on the evening of December 21, 2010.

Marlene's courageous five year battle with breast cancer developed into metastasis this past summer.  Her condition started to deteriorate rapidly Monday morning and she was admitted to the Juravinski Hospital Tuesday morning and passed away peacefully Tuesday evening surrounded by all of her family.

Marlene has been a member of the Brock Community since 2000. During her tenure as professor, researcher, creator, Director and Chair she provided leadership and love to her colleagues and students in the Department of Dramatic Arts.  She was instrumental to the development of the Department as a site of luminous and rigorous investigation of theatre praxis.  Her mentorship of five colleagues through tenure and promotion is but one facet of her legacy to the future of our research, pedagogy, and community. Her presence in the burgeoning theatre scene of St. Catharines was only recently curtailed as she focused her creative energies to meet the challenge of cancer - the vision of her initiatives remains undiminished and in our hearts.

Marlene fought this cancer with such strength, courage and determination. The Department greatly mourns her passing.

98 St. Paul Street, St. Catharines

The Department of Dramatic Arts hosted an informal afternoon of live acoustic entertainment with an open mic. Here friends, family and supporters shared stories and memories of Marlene with eachother in celebration of an influential professor, researcher and friend.

  During her tenure at Brock Marlene and husband Philip adopted the beautiful Cecilia (CeCe), seen here on the left, riding the ponies in Port Dalhousie.  The Department was blessed to have CeCe brought into our lives in 2004. where she made her mainstage debut.  Ever the proud stage mom, below we see Marlene attending to CeCe (in pink ballerina costume) during the filming of a video scene for our stage production of MEDEA, produced for the Sean O'Sullivan Theatre in 2008.

Following the Visitation on December 28, 2010, a celebration of Marlene's life (reunion) took place on her birthday, January 4, 2011 in the Camilla and Peter Dalglish Atrium of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington.  Dr. David Fancy, Chair of the Department of Dramatic Arts, delivered an heartfelt eulogy for Marlene, available here.

In her honour we have established the Marlene Moser Memorial Scholarship. The cheque or gift should be made out to Brock University and indicate Marlene Moser Memorial Scholarship. All donations are eligible to be matched dollar for dollar by the provincial government.

Dr. Marlene Moser held a PhD from the Graduate Centre for Study of Toronto at the University of Toronto and pursued research on the construction of identities, especially as related to performance, narrative and spectatorship, most specifically in the area of Canadian drama and theatre. Praxis (the movement between theory and practice) was also one of her interests, both in its applications to pedagogy and to creative projects. She was also involved as a writer and director in a number of interdisciplinary projects.
