Honours

Students have a choice of three main areas in which to focus:

Classical Languages stream
Classical Studies stream
Ancient Art and Archaeology stream

The Classical Languages stream emphasizes proficiency in Greek and Latin languages and knowledge in ancient literature.  Ancient Art and Archaeology emphasizes the material culture or the ancient Mediterranean Region from the perspective of anthropological archaeology and art history.  Classical Studies combines the study of Greek and Roman History, religion, and literature.  Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Classics, however, students in all three streams take some courses in the other areas.

We see the Classical Languages Honours degree as the one for serious would-be philologists and historians and the Ancient Art and Archaeology Honours degree as the one for students seeking to do graduate work in Classical Archaeology, Near Eastern Studies, or to obtain a certificate in Museum curatorship or the like.  Students bound for graduate work in a Classics department are strongly encouraged to exceed the minimum languages requirements. Students seeking to teach Latin or Classics at the secondary level would be well positioned to do so (entrance requirements are five credits in Latin).

Classical Studies stream

• one (1) full credit in ancient history (Greek and/or Roman)
• one (1) full credit in Greek or Latin
• eight (8) total credits in CLAS/GREE/LATI
• one (1) full credit in social science context
• one (1) full credit in science context
• three (3) elective credits
