MA Applied Linguistics (TESL) Program Information

Introduction

Teaching English as a Subsequent Language (TESL) is a complex process, with a knowledge base combining such diverse areas as applied linguistics, language teaching methodology, curriculum design, and testing.  This MA program is designed to integrate these important elements in an educational experience promoting a high level of expertise and professionalism.  Faculty teaching in the program bring a valuable range of attributes, including extensive international experience, hands-on proficiency in ESL teaching in Canada, capacity in a range of different languages other than English, and research and scholarship published and presented around the world.  Graduates of this program will be well prepared to take up posts as TESL professionals in Canada or abroad.

General Admission Requirements 

These admission requirements are for both Direct and Bridged Entry.  Please note that applications are competitive and program numbers are kept small for optimum interaction between students and faculty.  Qualifying for the program may not be sufficient for admission in any given year, depending on the number and quality of applications received.

Undergraduate Degree

A minimum four-year university degree with an overall grade average equivalent to a Canadian 75% (B+).
 

Academic Background

A strong background (undergraduate, graduate or university credit-level certification) in linguistics, applied linguistics, TESL, or a comparable field, with a strong concentration of courses directly relevant to the theory and practice of teaching English as a subsequent language.  These relevant courses include – but are not limited to – phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics, English grammar, acquisition and learning of subsequent languages, language teaching methods and language testing.
 

Applicants without the necessary background may be considered for a conditional offer, based on successful completion of upgrading courses or a university credit-level certificate course such as Brock University’s Certificate in Teaching English as a Subsequent/Foreign Language. 
 

Professional Experience

Experience in ESL/EFL teaching can enhance your application but will not compensate for inadequate academic background and grades.
