Working Title - Sexual Violence and the Lived Experience: Narratives and Perceptions of Women in Lebanon

My experiences visiting Lebanon have revealed to me a fundamental lack of social justice for women in this country. With military conflict having touched the country most recently, my personal and academic history has posed questions concerning the relationships between women and power structures within the context of the warzone.
In particular, my research will delve into the effects of the environment of war on the mentality of women, and the influences upon the motivations and justifications of sexual assault targeting women, from ideological and personal perspectives. In the research I propose for my dissertation, I combine in-depth interviews, a methodology borrowed from the social sciences, and the discourse analysis of narratives, conducted within the discipline of Humanities. Thus the interdisciplinarity of my work lies within many disciplines including Criminology, Sociology, Women’s Studies as well as Trauma Theory.
