The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Health Management & Wellness, the incumbent is responsible for the administration of the University’s Short Term Disability (STD) program, medical accommodations, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) claims management, the return to work process and assisting in employee wellness programs. The incumbent will be the first point of contact for employees throughout a claim and will liaise accordingly with physicians, supervisors, unions, and employees. The Health Management Consultant will adhere to consistent application of processes amongst employee groups.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Providing adjudication of Short Term Disability claims from the onset of the claim until the employee returns to full job duties; establishing and maintaining contact with employees, departmental supervisor, health care providers, and union representatives; initiating documentation, reviewing documentation and analyzing how the employee’s ability to function is impacted in comparison to the physical demands of the job; and offering suitable timely return to work options
• Providing adjudication of Requests for Medical Accommodation, utilizing knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and an employers duty to accommodate; initiating accommodation process and requesting appropriate documentation; reviewing documentation, analyzing information provided, and making recommendations for accommodation
• Facilitating WSIB claim management, utilizing knowledge of provincial legislation; initiating WSIB documentation/reporting; coordinating WSIB claims information with employee, WSIB personnel, physicians, supervisors/managers etc.; and maintaining appropriate statistics
• Developing return to work plans; conducting return to work meetings for all STD, LTD, WSIB related claims; providing direction and assistance in the reintegration of employees back to work
• Providing assistance in the delivery of employee Wellness initiatives/workshops and participating in the University’s Wellness Committee
• Conducting Ergonomic Assessments and Physical Demands Analyses
• Preparing LTD applications and liaising with the University’s current carrier on claim status and implementation of return to work plans
• Executing best practice health management philosophies

The ideal candidate will have:
• A university degree in health management or a related field, as well as certification as a Regulated Healthcare Professional (e.g. Kinesiologist, Physiotherapist etc.)
• A minimum of 1 to 2+ years of relevant experience with health management
• Demonstrated working knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board Act, the Regulated Health Professions Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, FIPPA, PIPEDA, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other relevant legislation and regulations
• Proven ability to understand medical terminology, human anatomy, and effects of injury and disease on physiology
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with return to work and accommodation principles and vocational rehabilitation principles
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills and the proven ability to interact effectively with a diverse population at all levels, with cultural sensitivity
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, manage a high volume of work and competing demands for time
• Strong judgement, analytical and problem solving skills
• Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications and web maintenance, social media, internet search engines
