The Opportunity
The General Legal Counsel provides the Board of Trustees, Senior Administration, Deans, Directors, Administration, and Faculty members, with effective legal counsel, advice, direction, and representation on the entire range of University legal matters. This position will provide advice about contracts, University policies and regulations, policy development and issues management.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Advising the Vice President, Finance and Administration, Board of Trustees, senior administrators on all matters pertaining to applicable litigation, laws, regulations, and other duties under the law, and provide proactive professional advice on critical strategic, legal and public policy issues
• Ensuring limited risk exposure to the University’s finances, personnel and public image, and representing the University on litigation and all legally related matters e.g. contracts, non-disclosure agreements, procurement, board of governance by-laws
• Ensuring that the University operates within the appropriate legal governance framework, and taking responsibility for the identification and management of legal risks across the university
• Attending Board meetings, maintaining Board By-laws and advising Board of Governors on corporate procedures and obligations
• Developing and implementing an ethical vision and strategic plan for the University’s legal services
• Identifying and prioritizing the response to various areas of legal risk and establishing a clearly understood framework for legal policies
• Recommending, reviewing and developing new University policies and procedures for board approval as required; enforcing policies through well-publicized guidelines and overseeing the creation and maintenance of a policies and procedures
• Ensuring the effective communication between the Board and Senate
• Providing leadership and expertise to ensure the effective operation and administration of the University's collegial system of governance
• Providing education, training, and information on legal issues
• Advising all units on complex business transactions, including negotiation, drafting and review

The ideal candidate will have:
• An undergraduate degree and a Bachelor of Law or equivalent and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
• A minimum of 3 – 5 years of experience in management of legal affairs, preferably within a University or broader public sector environment
• Familiarity with university issues, culture and organization
• Demonstrated Practice experience within an appropriate field (post-secondary research contract review, administrative law)
• Demonstrated legal research and negotiating skills with the ability to take independent initiative or work collaboratively with others
• Proven leadership and management skills; ability to identify and distil applicable legal issues and principles to given fact situations and questions
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to present legal opinions and arguments
• Analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise judgment, tact diplomacy and confidentiality
• Ability to work under pressure and respond to competing demands and changing/conflicting priorities
• Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications and web maintenance, social media, internet search engines (e.g. Microsoft Office – Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
