The Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for all aspects of the donor development cycle from identification, engagement, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The incumbent will achieve the capital fundraising objectives which enhance the student learning experience, improve the student learning environment and empower faculty as educator-researchers and innovators. The incumbent will support fundraising objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Identifying prospects and potential donors
• Implementing Major Gift activities for all aspects of the donor development cycle
• Identifying opportunities for the President and Vice-Chancellor, the Provost, and other University representatives to participate in donor activities
• Liaising with the Development Research team to develop and provide background and briefing materials to individuals attending donor meetings
• Liaising and working with the Deans and faculty members on fundraising projects
• Attending donor events and engaging donors and prospects
• Setting short-term development goals in concert with senior managers
• Ensuring a continuous stream of potential major gift prospects are identified and researched utilizing the resources of the Research Office
• Providing ongoing stewardship of all past and current major gift donors in the portfolio
• Preparing reports and update and maintain accurate and timely information for individual donor records within the major gift portfolio
The ideal candidate will have:
• An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
• Several years of major gift, fundraising or relevant experience (preferably in an educational institution)
• G Class driver’s license
• A successful track record of solicitation major gifts (over $100,000), demonstrated experience and proven results in donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
• Strong understanding of Advancement Research and prospect research methodologies
• A comprehensive understanding and knowledge of fundraising principles, strategies, and execution of contact strategies
• Solid and thorough understanding of University-level education and a philanthropic environment in Ontario, Canada and internationally
• Experience with Raiser’s Edge database or a similar fundraising database
• Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications and web maintenance, social media, internet search engines
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an environment with sensitive and confidential information and situations
• Highly developed written and oral communication skills as well as face-to-face relationship building skills including strong presentation skills and strong cold calling ability
• Strong negotiation skills including the ability to build on common ground
• Proven ability to think outside the box
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines
• Strong analytical, research, interpretative, and evaluation skills
• Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification is considered an asset
