The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Services for Students with Disabilities, the Disability Specialist/Case Manager provides support for students with Mental Health disorders, medical and sensory disabilities, Learning Disabilities (LD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by developing accommodation plans, reviewing documentation submitted by students to ensure it meets recommended guidelines, providing liaison with faculty and other department personnel, providing disability related counselling (any further reference to counselling in this job description refers to disability related counselling), developing student self-advocacy skills, and making referrals to appropriate services.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Providing case management of students with various disability related concerns that are requesting services through the SSWD
• Reviewing various types of documentation of disability ensuring all information is complete
• Recommending appropriate accommodations based on functional limitations, and essential course and program requirements
• Planning, coordinating, developing and implementing support services for students with disabilities
• Undertaking internal and external advocacy regarding students with disabilities and their academic support needs and accommodations for students’ individual academic needs
• Completing administrative responsibilities as a member of the SSWD team including but not limited to:
• Participating in team and committee meetings
• Advising and providing consultation and in-service workshops to the University Community regarding disability related issues in the academic environment, as requested and as time permits
• Considering, reviewing and recommending bursary (BSWD) for students on caseload, as needed, and in conjunction with other SSWD staff (eg. AT, LS and supervisor) and consulting with other funding agencies/internal departments regarding funding support for needed individual aids/devices/services for students

The ideal candidate will have:
• Completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field such as social work, psychology, education and/or the completion of a Master’s Degree in a related field, such as disability studies, social work, psychology, education etc. or 5+ years of relevant experience in the post-secondary environment
• A couple of years of progressive and related experience, working specifically with individuals with disabilities (preferably in a post-secondary environment)
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the functional impact of a disability, related concerns and the resulting impact on student’s academic and/or class, and/or social participation in a post-secondary educational environment
• Strong knowledge of applicable human rights legislation and its implications in a post-secondary academic environment
• Proven knowledge of assistive technology and implications for students in the post-secondary educational environment
• Effective communication skills and the ability to advocate for the needs of students with various stakeholders
• Strong negotiation, problem solving, conflict resolution and mediation skills and the proven ability to exercise tact and diplomacy
• Effective presentation and group facilitation skills
• Ability to develop innovative ways/strategies/programs to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities
• Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to deal with multiple and competing priorities
• Ability to work independently whilst demonstrating sound clinical judgment
