The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, and working collaboratively with the Office of University Advancement, the Faculty Advancement and Communications Officer is responsible for all fundraising, development, alumni, external community, recruitment & liaison, and communication activities within the Faculty. The successful realization of advancement goals will require effective collaboration with the Dean and Associate Deans and relevant Departments, Centres, and faculty members within Humanities.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Working in accordance with all Board of Trustees’ policies and with established advancement protocols with regard to prospect clearance
• Supporting the vision and priorities of the Faculty of Humanities by developing and implementing a long-term fundraising, alumni and communication strategy to promote the academic mission of the Faculty of Humanities
• Planning and managing all philanthropic and sponsorship activity of the Faculty of Humanities
• Building and cultivating relationships with respect to development with the following constituencies: donors, alumni, key community stakeholders, and members of the community
• Managing, prospecting and developing an active major gift portfolio and ensuring a continuous stream of potential major gift prospects are identified and researched
• Assisting with the central University’s Annual Fund activities
• Communicating and coordinating the Faculty of Humanities alumni activities with the Office of Development and Donor Relations and attending Alumni Relations events
• Promoting estate planning and planned giving initiatives
• Engaging Faculty donors and prospects in University donor recognition activities
• Coordinating, attending and representing the Faculty of Humanities at internal and external events with Faculty VIPs, prospects and donors
• Developing and updating an evolving strategic plan in the area of development by setting short-term and long-term development goals, in concert with the Dean and Development Office
• Preparing and writing major gift proposals, regular departmental gift activity and quantitative reports
• Providing ongoing stewardship of all past and current major gifts
• Managing fundraising resources and ensuring ongoing familiarity with current trends in fund development
• Developing a communication strategy and alumni strategy and key messaging for the Faculty of Humanities
• Providing Public Relations and Media coordination in support of the Faculty and Dean’s activities, including: announcements, public presentations, interviews and special events

The ideal candidate will have:

• A university degree in a related field
• Several years of fundraising and communications experience in a post-secondary education setting
• Demonstrated experience in major gift ($100,000+) solicitations and a reputation for developing cooperative and mutual relationships with stakeholders at all levels (strongly preferred)
• Demonstrated experience in communications (media, PR, marketing)
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities with demonstrated networking ability
• Demonstrated ability with website design and maintenance
• Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Creative and innovative strategic planner with excellent organizational and time management skills
• Well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach and train people in the area of fundraising
• A comprehensive understanding and knowledge of fundraising principles, strategies and execution of contact strategies
• Strong relational database and report writing experience
• Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification (an asset)
