Research Ethics Board (REB) Coordinator

The Ethics Office ensures Brock is compliant with Canadian polices for research with human participants as established by the Tri-Council. Reporting to the Manager of Research Ethics, the Coordinator provides all administrative and clerical functions related to ethics approval of research projects involving human participants; contributes significantly to the adherence and development of policies and guidelines in the application and approval process as established by the Tri-Council Policy Statement; and provides administrative and operational support to the Research Ethics Boards.
A significant component of this position involves researching policies, synthesizing information and developing appropriate procedures. Responsibilities will include acting as a first point of contact for researchers and providing general information and advice to the Brock research community regarding ethics protocol submissions/revisions, the review process, and ethics policies; pre-screening all research protocols and assessing potential risk to research participants; overseeing the processing of all research protocols and REB decisions; ensuring prompt assessment of all research protocols; maintaining and managing an electronic database and paper records and updating the website; preparing monthly statistical reports; taking minutes; and researching, drafting, and maintaining REB guidelines, procedural documents, application and user forms. This position may also research and synthesize information required for full board reviews; correspond with expert external reviewers; attend and provide support to the REB committee as a non-voting ex-officio member; and assist with the preparation, coordination and delivery of educational presentations, workshops, newsletters and manuals.
The successful candidate will possess a related university degree combined with knowledge of university research processes and the ethics of research involving human participants and experience in preparing ethics applications and conducting research, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You will bring knowledge of best practices and procedures for the researcher, participants, the university and community, as well as experience working with boards/committees; writing policies and procedures; and demonstrated ability to analyze, evaluate, reason, define and resolve problems. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, including tact, judgement and diplomacy are essential. Advanced computer skills, including website development, internet, database management and presentations are required as well as project management skills.
