The Department of Physics at Brock University invites applications for a 12-month Instructional Limited Term Appointment at the rank of Lecturer/Assistant Professor. The position available is for the period May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014 with a possibility of renewal.
This position includes teaching eight half-credit courses per academic year, or equivalent, as assigned by the Dean on the recommendation of the Chair, during the 2013 Spring Evening and subsequent Fall and Winter semesters. The teaching duties will be reflective of the person's expertise and interests with the expectation that some courses will be at the first-year level. As the Department of Physics develops online course offerings, some of the instructional responsibilities may include coordinating, developing and delivering online courses.
Some of the teaching duties may be fulfilled through providing academic support in the form of maintaining a Physics Help Desk presence; offering continuous and non-course-specific support for all students enrolled in Physics courses; summarizing and communicating to other instructors emerging patterns in the academic support needs of the students; and, monitoring the use and ensuring consistency within Physics programs of innovative instructional technologies (web-based tools, computer-based testing systems, clickers, etc.).
Participation in the Administrative tasks of the Department is also expected, including outreach activities, initiatives aimed at improving retention and students' progression, working with other faculty in utilizing plagiarism-detection resources and initiating Departmental investigations of suspected cases of academic misconduct, etc.
The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in Physics, PhD strongly preferred. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the University level, in producing educational materials at the University and first-year transition levels, independence and strong leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills, being approachable and supportive of first-year students, and demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications are required.
