Job Summary

The Department of Child and Youth Studies at Brock University invites applications for a twelve month limited term appointment as Lecturer/Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2013. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.


Preferred qualifications are a Ph.D. (ABD may be considered) in psychology, sociology, anthropology or other related disciplines studying children and youth, with the ability to teach quantitative research methods. Quantitative expertise is required and research potential using quantitative methods is an asset. The successful candidate will be expected to teach the courses listed below (Quantitative Research Methods in Child and Youth Studies twice as well as one of two course groupings), to assist in undergraduate student supervision as required, and to participate in the affairs of the department.

The successful candidate is expected to teach statistics and one of the two groupings of courses depending on their relative expertise:

CHYS 3P15 Quantitative Research Methods in Child and Youth Studies (Fall and Winter terms)
Practical, theoretical and ethical issues in quantitative research design including computer applications and analyses.
Estimated enrolment of 126 students per term.

Developmental Grouping

CHYS 3P11 Theories of Development and Socialization (Winter term)
Interdisciplinary exploration of child and youth development and socialization, including the foundational literature in psychology, sociology and anthropology, as well as contemporary and critical interpretive theories of childhood and youth. empathy, motivation, disorders, and cross-cultural perspectives.
Estimated enrollment of 60 students.

CHYS 4P65 Issues in Thinking and Development (Fall term)
Contemporary issues in learning and cognitive development. Topics may include memory, problem solving, creativity, collaborative thinking processes, moral reasoning and social cognition..
Estimated enrolment of 30students.

Sociocultural Grouping

CHYS 4P02 Peer Cultures (Winter term)
Survey of peer cultures emphasizing social structural and interpretive understandings of peer group formation and their impact on child and youth identity.

CHYS 4P16 Children Youth and Globalization (Fall term)
Political-economic and postmodern perspectives on globalization and its effect on children and youth.
Estimated enrolment of 30 students.
