Reporting to the Manager, Financial Aid, the Senior Financial Aid Officer will assist students and parents, and process application and funding through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). This process includes interaction with students, Brock’s information systems, and Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) processes and software. Working in a high volume department with constant interruptions and inquiries, this position plays a vital role in the determination of funding available for each student. Working independently with significant discretionary authority, this position is accountable to both the University and the MTCU through OSAP administrator guidelines. The MTCU will randomly inspect and audit decisions made by the Sr. Financial Aid Officer. Responsibilities include articulating file issues with MTCU; determining the validity of OSAP reviews; and advocating for student appeals as well as consideration of alternative sources of assistance. The position requires an extensive and constantly revised understanding of many complex OSAP and MTCU policies and procedures.
The successful candidate will possess a related degree/diploma and thorough knowledge of OSAP policies, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of computer systems and the demonstrated ability to learn and continually update skills as well as understand complex regulations is required. In addition to superior organization and time management skills, you bring experience working independently and under pressure in a high volume environment with highly repetitive and detailed tasks. You bring solid computer skills; strong attention to detail and numeracy; effective and persuasive verbal and written communication skills; active listening; tact, empathy, sound and careful judgment and the ability to maintain respect when dealing with distressed and sometimes adversarial clients.
