The Opportunity
Reporting to the Chair, Department of Dramatic Arts (DART), the Technical Director is responsible for managing the technical stage production elements of Dramatic Arts Department shows and course outcomes, supporting the teaching of technical production by providing training and lab demonstration, supervising students and contractors, and maintaining physical spaces and equipment within the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Coordinating financial responsibilities for production including: evaluating designs within the parameters of established budgets and schedules; calculating time/labor and materials budgets; providing budgetary estimates, regular budget updates, work completion records, and expenditure reports to the Production Manager; coordinating efficient technical equipment maintenance program; developing preliminary costing of all shows; managing distribution of production keys and petty cash floats in consultation with the Production Manager; and determining and collecting handling fees for any rented supplies from storage in consultation with the Production Manager
• Providing technical coordination of DART productions including: contributing to Master Schedule of annual DART productions in consultation with Production Manager and the production team; working with designers to adapt designs for theatre situation, providing working drawings, accurate measurements, stock information, updated inventory lists, and advice; fulfilling role of Head Technician in ordering, purchasing, building, and providing technical expertise for shows; supervising all contracted and student technical workers and craftspeople in production tasks, including providing job descriptions and training/guidelines to ensure a clean and safe work environment; and attending meetings
• Providing administrative and classroom support by: maintaining theatre stock in storage along with donations and acquisitions and managing the lending, renting, and safe return of any stock; reporting any accidents/incidents; maintaining basic and safe laboratory teaching spaces for all classes held in department; providing basic furniture and acting equipment/supplies to instructors; informing acting/practicum instructors of resources available to them; providing guidance and on-the-job training for student technicians to serve the range of departmental activities; organizing and supervising set-up and strike-down for directing projects and class outcomes; providing mentorship and guidance to students on technical theatre


The ideal candidate will have:
• College Diploma in Technical Theatre, Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Valid G class driver’s license (or equivalent) with an excellent drivers’ abstract - (the successful candidate will need to demonstrate proof of an excellent driving record)
• Several years of demonstrated experience in Production departments of professional theatres
• Demonstrated ability in stage craft, production planning, safety standards, carpentry skills, and operation of related machinery and equipment
• Proven ability to interpret blue prints and technical drawings
• Demonstrated knowledge of basic structural integrity pertaining to materials commonly used in the industry, including rigging and set assembly
• Excellent grasp of stage lighting, sound, design, and technical/electrical requirements, including knowledge of basic electricity and of lighting and audio control systems
• Demonstrated knowledge of all areas of theatrical production in diverse theatre organization models
• Proven ability to manage finances, and project material and labour costs
• Demonstrated commitment to the art of the theatre
• Proven ability to collaborate to achieve the creative vision of director/designer/team
• Excellent oral and written communication and reporting skills for budgeting, mentoring, and supervising
• Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, and good collaboration skills to work with a variety of stakeholders
• Proven ability to work creatively with limited physical space, challenging schedules, and tight design delivery times
• Demonstrated ability to creatively provide cost effective and innovative alternatives for stage design
• Pyrotechnician Certification (an asset)
• Membership in Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology (CITT), United States Institute for Theater Technology (USITT) or similar organization (preferred)
