Reporting to the Manager, Structural Services, the Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level and provides routine maintenance on various building systems including tasks such as cutting, fitting, installing and repairing cabinets, repair/maintenance of interior/exterior building elements and building envelope, to specifications and standards of the trade.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Performing hand and bench work in the Carpenter Shop or at the job site
• Operating carpentry and woodworking equipment such as planers, jointers, drill presses, power saws, routers etc.
• Repairing furniture
• Adjusting and repairing window mechanisms, thermal unit replacements, performing door repairs
• Completing minor floor repairs, securing carpet, installing or repairing small VCT tiles, installing vinyl baseboard or wooden baseboard
• Completing minor drywall repairs or ceiling tile installation/replacement
• Repairing, modifying or fabricating millwork
• Completing minor downspout repair/replacement or repair/maintenance of interior/exterior building elements and building envelope
• Performing preventative maintenance reviews of campus areas and reporting findings on standard forms or in computer applications
• Making recommendations for minor repairs, including initiating work requests for internal trades
• Ensuring shop equipment is maintained in proper working conditions and performing housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered and safe working environment
• Assisting the Manager, Structural Services with input for planning, material orders, accompanying contractors and estimating costs for minor work
• Other duties as assigned
The ideal candidate will have:
• General Carpenter Journeyman trade certification (e.g. #7271)
• Demonstrated knowledge of all building systems (interior finishes, roofing, building exteriors, etc.) and previous related experience
• Proven ability to perform quality carpentry work and maintenance of various building systems
• Demonstrated ability to utilize PC-based software systems such as CAD, MS-Office Suite, CMMS and other related software
• Ontario Drivers’ License (G) with a good driving record
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and ability to work rotating shifts
• Clear Criminal Background check
