We are pleased to announce a postdoctoral fellowship opportunity for an exceptional individual with knowledge and interest in climate change adaptation, water governance and resilience. This is a 2.5 year fellowship with a start date of February, 2013.
A consortium of international partners is embarking on a newly funded project – Climate change adaptation and water governance (CADWAGO). Funded by a trio of European Foundations (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Compagnia di San Paolo and VolkwagenStiftung), the project will develop the knowledge base and capacity to adapt to climate change through improved water governance approaches. CADWAGO brings together 10 partners from Europe, Australasia and North America who have extensive social science research experience in climate change adaptation and water governance issues, thereby extending the collective global knowledge base through sharing methods and findings. CADWAGO builds on the lessons from on-going and recent research cases to create a forum and dialogue between researchers and stakeholders at different scales. The lessons from the cases will be synthesized and used in the adaptation of key European policy processes and governance actions that have a global impact. More information about CADWAGO and the cases is available at http://www.cadwago.net. Work package #1 is based at Brock University. It considers how stakeholders’ perceptions of ecosystems affect the transition towards systemic and adaptive water governance under conditions of climatic change. In addition to familiarity with water governance and climate change adaptation, the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow should have a strong conceptual grounding in resilience thinking and application.
The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the following activities.
• Developing good working relations with other CADWAGO researchers in Europe, Australia and Canada.
• Working with two other Post Doctoral Fellows (at Open University, UK and University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia) as a Community of Practice.
• Collecting and analyzing data for the Niagara (Great Lakes) case
• Facilitating the collection of data from the cases and analyzing it to understand how the ecological system is perceived.
• Undertaking cross-case comparisons of the perceptions using resilience typologies.
• Evaluating the implications of those perceptions for water governance.
• Planning meetings, conference calls, and other forms of communications central to the project.
• Preparing project-based materials and scholarly outputs (e.g., conference presentations, journal articles, book chapters).
• PhD in relevant field or equivalent
• Excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced by publications
• Strong intellectual background relating to water governance and climate change adaptation as well as the conceptual lens outlined in the particular work package
• Ability to work effectively in complex team relationships, with differing scientific and cultural contexts
• Ability to organise workloads and work to challenging targets and deadlines
• Willingness and flexibility to travel
• Experience of arranging and/or facilitating multi-stakeholder workshops
• Experience of working within the case location specified in the associated work package
• Experience of completing University ethics procedures
Located at Brock University in Canada, the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow would be part of the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (see http://www.brocku.ca/environmental-sustainability-research-centre). The fellow will be supervised by Dr. Ryan Plummer and collaborate closely with Drs. Diane Dupont and Steven Renzetti.
The rate of funding will be at least equivalent to that provided by SSHRC/NSERC for Post-Doctoral Research Fellows. Support for research activities will also be provided. The appointment is for 2.5 years, subject to satisfactory performance appraisals. The appointment begins in February, 2013.
