For Health Care Providers

The Power Cord Program offers wheelchair accessible exercise rehabilitation for individuals with spinal cord injury. We focus on enhancing strength and cardiovascular fitness as well as improving function (including, but not limited to walking function).

Before any potential participants can begin the exercise program, we as that they consult a Physician to determine that they are medically stable and ready for exercise.

Participants will have an individualized exercise program that will focus on their own person health and functional goals. Therefore, participants may or may not use all of the equipment available, but we do offer the following forms of exercise:

  • Wheelchair accessible weight training
  • Wheelchair accessible aerobic exercise
  • Body-weight supported treadmill training
  • High-intensity circuit training
  • Functional electrical stimulation (FES) exercise
    • FES-cycling
    • FES-arm exercise
    • FES-walking exercise
    • Combined FES arm and leg exercise

When consulting with a potential exerciser, please consider the following:

  • Existing cardiovascular disease that may contraindicate moderate exercise
  • Existing pressure sores that need to heal before engaging in exercise
  • A high susceptibility to moderate to severe autonomic dysreflexia
  • Please note: Cardiac pacemakers, unhealed fractures and pregnancy are absolute contraindicators for FES exercise
  • Any other physical or psychological factor that may contraindicate regular exercise
  • Please note, we do not consider muscle spasticity, postural hypotension or neuropathic pain to be limiting factors

Participants may or may come to you with the following form. Please feel free to print it and use it as part of your assessment if you wish.
