Get Active!

Was your New Year's Resolution to stay more active? Are you having trouble keeping it? That's okay, because your Peer Health Educators are here to help! There are many easy things you can do around the Brock campus to stay active and stay healthy.

Did you know?

Public Health Agency of Canada recommends:

  • You get approximately 30 - 60 min. of physical activity daily
  • You focus on 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous aerobic activty thoughout the week, broken into 10 min. (or longer) sessions.
  • Target your muscles and bones at least two days per week.

 

Tips to help you get active

  • Choose a variety of physical activities you enjoy. Try different activities until you find the ones that feel right for you.
  • Get into a routine. Go to the pool, hit the gym, join a spin class or set a regular run and do some planned exercise. Make it social by getting someone to join you.
  • Limit the time you spend watching TV or sitting in front of a computer during leisure time.
  • Move yourself. Use active transportation to get places. Whenever you can, walk, bike, or run instead of taking the car.
  • Spread your sessions of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity throughout the week. Do at least 10 minutes of physical activity at a time.
  • Join a team. Take part in sports and recreation activities in groups. You’ll make new friends and get active at the same time.

Where?

  • The Walker Complex includes three gymnasiums that are open and free to Brock students for casual recreation. You can head over there in between classes or on the weekend to play such sports like volleyball, basketball and badminton, free of charge.
  • - Over looking the Ian Beddis gymnasium, there is a 200m recreational track that Brock students have free access to walk, jog or run.
  • - The Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre (50m pool), squash courts, four outdoor tennis courts and seven outdoor playing fields, which are open for students to use when not occupied.


- To use the facilities, simply go down to the equipment room and give your Student Card to receive a bracelet. When you are finished, return and pick up your Card.

Intramurals

  • Get involved in Brock's Intramurals, which continue to be one of the most popular campus activities. 
  • Thousands of students participate each year in more than 60 different leagues. 
  • It's a great way to meet new people, and provides an exciting way to stay active and get some exercise. 

The Zone

  • At very reasonable rates, students have the opportunity to join the Zone Fitness Centre which offers a vast amount of equipment for all types of training.
  • With a purchase of a membership, students receive one free orientation session, which includes a basic introduction to the fitness centre and a complete fitness program for a beginner, created by a certified personal trainer.
  • There is also a wide variety of programs such as aquatics, dance, and fitness that run throughout the year.

 

Brock Tips!

When You're At School...

  • It is often difficult for students to find time to be active but remember, every step counts
  • Take the stairs rather than the elevator if you are headed to study in the Tower.
  • Walk instead of catching the bus, or get off a stop early.

When You're at home...

  • Spend less time being inactive like watching TV or being on the computer.
  • Do yard work or household cleaning.
  • Put on some music and dance

Remember!

  • Stay motivated by being active with friends. This can be more fun and encouraging, which will increase the likelihood of you being active more often.
  • Time management is key. Always schedule time into your busy schedule for being active.
  • Brock offers many more opportunities for all students to be active, so get out there and have fun!
