Each year, external funding agencies recognize student excellence at Brock. External scholarships are offered on a competitive basis with award values ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 annually. It’s an important investment in your success — financial support that allows you to devote time and energy to a program of research and scholarship. OGS – Ontario Graduate Scholarship

Please note, this information will pertain to the Brock University's OGS application process. Each university will have its own application and deadline date.

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program encourages excellence in graduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels. The value of an OGS award for one year is $15,000, $5,000 per term. Students may receive the award for two terms ($10,000) or three terms ($15,000), the majority of the scholarships will be awarded for three terms. One-term awards are not granted.
Students must apply for the award at the university where they plan to attend graduate studies. The award is not transferable from University to University. This means that all undergraduate and graduate students wishing to apply for OGS, who plan to study at the graduate level at Brock, must apply and submit their OGS application to Brock.

DEADLINE DATE - The deadline date has been extended to November 21, 2012.
If you are an undergraduate student or graduate student at Brock, you must submit your application package to your current department/program by November 21, 2012.
If you are NOT a Brock student and plan to apply for graduate studies at Brock for 2013/14, you must submit your application to Joanne Kremble, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Brock University, 500 Glenridge Avenue, St. Catharines, ON L2S 3A1 by November 21, 2012.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
In order to be considered for an OGS, students must be:

• a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person [under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protections Act (Canada)] at the time of the OGS application deadline date.
• enrolled in or applying for admission to a graduate program on a full-time basis at Brock at the time of holding the award.
• Taking an eligible program on a full time basis.

An eligible program is defined as a full-time program of study of two or three terms at an eligible institution leading to a graduate degree.

Visa Students
International students who are studying in Ontario under a temporary resident visa - student study permit, under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) are eligible for the allotted visa student awards (Brock’s allocation is 2).

Minimum Academic Requirements
The applicant must, at minimum, meet the following OGS academic requirements:

•  if entering the first or second year of graduate studies at the time of application the student must have an overall average of at least A- (80%), or the equivalent, on the last 20 one-term/semester courses, or the equivalent, completed.
• if the student is entering the third year of graduate studies at the time of application the student must have an overall average of at least A- (80%), or the equivalent, on all graduate courses completed.

Eligibility Conditions
Master’s students can receive the scholarship for a maximum of two years and doctoral students for a maximum of four years, subject to a lifetime maximum of six years per student.

In addition, a lifetime maximum of six (6) years of government-funded student awards must have not have been exceeded by the applicant. Awards under the following programs will be counted toward this lifetime maximum:

• Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program (OGS)
• Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEIIGSST)
• Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS)
• Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
• Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
• Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR)

Applicants cannot hold an OGS scholarship and an award from any of the following programs, concurrently:

• Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEIIGSST)
• Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS)
• Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
• Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
• Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR)

Recipients must remain enrolled as a full-time student in an eligible program. Recipients who withdraw, transfer to part-time status, or fail to complete the term, will be required to repay the award.

Ontario Trillium Scholarship

The Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS) program is a significant initiative to attract more of the best qualified international students to Ontario for PhD studies. Brock University has an allocation of 2 awards for 2013/14, as well as renewing the 2011/12, 2012/13 awards. International students must complete and submit the OTS application form.

Application Deadline Date:  Friday, February 8, 2013.

Length of Award
The OTS scholarships are to be awarded to international PhD students for a maximum of four years. Awards are to be automatically awarded to the student for each of the three years following the first year provided the student maintains good academic standing (as defined by the eligible institution) and continues to meet the eligibility requirements. Students do not need to reapply each year for the OTS scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

• Recipients must be international students who hold a valid Canadian study permit (should an OTS recipient become a permanent resident, he/she will continue to be eligible for the OTS for the balance of his/her renewable OTS scholarship for a total of four years;

• recipients must have achieved a first-class average (80%) in each of the two years of full-time study prior to awarding of the OTS;

• recipients must not be currently studying at an Ontario postsecondary institution at the undergraduate or graduate level;

• recipient must not have concurrently accepted a scholarship or fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), or the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), or be in receipt of an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) or The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships In Science and Technology (QEII-GSST), formerly the Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST) award;

• recipients who withdraw, transfer to part-time status or fail to complete the term, without prior consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, may be required to repay the award.

• recipients may change the program of study with the prior written approval from the Dean of Graduate Studies or other institutionally designated official.
 

Eligible Start Dates for 2013-14 Competition:   May 1, 2013; September 1, 2013; or January 1, 2014.

Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST)

The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) program was formerly the OGSST program.
The QEII-GSST scholarships must be awarded to Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled full-time in approved research masters and/or doctoral programs in science and technology at an Ontario university. Further details regarding application procedures will be posted at a later date.
