Funding Support Packages

Full-time master’s students in funded graduate programs will receive graduate fellowship funding in accordance with the funded period length of the graduate program. Funded periods for a master’s program varies from 3 – 6 terms, depending on the program (consult the program regulations for details).

Full-time doctoral students in funded graduate programs will receive graduate fellowship funding in accordance with the funded period length of the graduate program. Funded period for a doctoral program is up to 4 years (12 terms), depending on the program (consult the program regulations for details).

Funding packages are posted to the student’s financial account (my.brocku.ca) The funding items are posted to the student’s account at the beginning of each term (September, January, May). The other items are one time lump sum payments posted to the student’s financial account (my.brocku.ca) at the beginning of the relevant term (typically the entering term). The Graduate Assistantship, is employment income, and is paid bi-weekly to the student’s personal bank account. Tuition and ancillary fees are posted to the student’s financial account (my.brocku.ca) at the beginning of each term (September, January, May) and deducted from the total graduate funding amount for the term. The balance is issued to the graduate student in the form of a cheque. Graduate students will receive an email notification to their Brock email informing them when a funding cheque is ready for pick up.  Please wait for the email notification from the Finance Office.

Graduate students may view their tuition fee assessments through their Brock Portal under "Finance History" and not in their Fee Calculator.  Fee Calculator is only for undergraduate students, not graduate students.

Please note that students on an approved Leave of Absence or Inactive term are not eligible to receive University financial support. Eligible funding terms may commence again following an approved Leave of Absence or Inactive term.

Brock University Graduate Fellowship  
Typical graduate fellowships are $7,000/year for those entering a funded master’s program (as of 2014/15). Graduate fellowships for full-time doctoral students are typically $12,000/year. Graduate fellowship funding will be adjusted if a student receives OGS or Tri-Council external scholarship funds.  In lieu of a graduate fellowship, you will receive a DGS Excellence Scholarship. (DGS Excellence Scholarship replaces Graduate Fellowships for scholarship recipients.)

Dean of Graduate Studies Excellence Scholarships
Excellence Scholarships of $5,000 are awarded to recipients of Tri-Council Scholarships (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) registered in funded masters programs; and $7,500 to recipients registered in funded doctoral programs.  Excellence Scholarships of $2,500 are awarded to recipients of OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarships) registered in funded masters programs; and $5000 to recipients registered in funded doctoral programs. The Excellence Scholarships are awarded for each year that the external scholarship is held during the program’s defined funding period.

Note: CGS Doctoral Scholarship ($35,000), Vanier Doctoral Scholarship ($50,000) and Ontario Trillium Scholarship ($40,000) recipients are not eligible to receive a Dean of Graduate Studies Excellence Scholarship.

Brock University International Tuition Fellowship
The typical international tuition fellowship is $6250/year.  International tuition fellowships are awarded to full-time international students in funded programs, for the funded period length of the graduate program.  This fellowship will assist in discounting the international tuition fees.

Brock University Research Fellowship

Research fellowship funds may range up to $10,000 per year.  Research fellowship amounts vary and are specified by the graduate supervisor.  Research fellowship funds are research training stipends and as such are not counted as employment. Prospective graduate students should contact their potential graduate supervisor and Graduate Program Director to inquire whether they are eligible to receive a research fellowship.

Dean of Graduate Studies Entrance Scholarship
Graduate Entrance Scholarships are offered by the Dean of Graduate Studies to qualified full-time incoming domestic master’s students. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will automatically assess the student file for entrance scholarship eligibility. Application by the student is not required. The entrance scholarship is awarded at the discretion of the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Graduate Studies Bursary
Graduate Studies bursary funds are intended to assist full-time graduate students with unanticipated or non-typical financial needs. To be considered for a Graduate Studies Bursary students must complete a “Graduate Studies Bursary Application”. Students must outline the reasons for the specific bursary request and must have their Graduate Program Director (or equivalent) complete Section V of the application prior to submission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Students may apply for a Graduate Studies Bursary at anytime during the academic year (Fall, Winter or Spring).

Students applying for a Graduate Studies Bursary are must fully explain the nature of their unanticipated need for funds. They should also provide official supporting documentation (in addition to the application form) to support their particular bursary request. Such supporting documentation will be determined by the nature of the bursary request.

For Graduate Studies Bursary applications, decisions will be made at the next scheduled meeting of the Graduate Studies Bursary Review Committee and bursaries are processed through the graduate student’s financial account as soon as possible following the committee meeting. If the bursary request is an emergency in nature, the committee will endeavour to review the application as soon as possible.

All completed Graduate Studies Bursary applications must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies two full working days prior to the scheduled meeting date.

The Bursary Review Committee is scheduled to meet monthly to review bursary applications.

Ontario First Generation Bursary
The Government of Ontario has allocated funds to create a bursary fund for students who are the first in their family to attend a university or college. A student in any year of study is eligible, pending they are studying full time in the Fall/Winter session and are Residents of Ontario and demonstrate financial need.
By applying for the Ontario First Generation Bursary students are confirming that, they are the first generation in their family to participate in postsecondary studies and declare that their parents did not attend postsecondary studies full-time or part-time, in or outside Canada, at any time or in any program. The funds will be credited to the student’s financial account.
The student must submit a Graduate Studies Bursary to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by October 15.

International Entrance Bursary
The International Entrance bursary ($3000) is awarded to a limited number of full-time international master’s students who have accepted offers of admission to a funded graduate program. The students who are eligible to apply are notified of their eligibility via their offer of admission letter. The application deadline date for international master’s graduate students entering their program in the Spring (May) term must submit their application by March 1st; students entering in the Fall (September) term must submit their application by July 1st and students entering in the Winter (January) term must submit their application by Novermber 1st. Bursary applications will be reviewed as they are received.  Upon approval of your bursary, the funding support will be posted to your student financial account ($1500 Fall term, $750 in the Winter term and $750 in the Spring term). Please note, there is a limited amount of bursaries available per year.

The Student Access Guarantee is an initiative created by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, to help support postsecondary students in Ontario. The Guarantee states that no qualified Ontario student should be prevented from attending school because of a lack of financial support programs. Students should have access to resources to help pay for tuition, books, and mandatory school fees.

In order to be considered for the student access guarantee, you must apply for, and accept, OSAP funding. For most students, OSAP funding will be sufficient to address financial need under the Student Access Guarantee. If OSAP funding isn’t sufficient to address your financial shortfall for tuition, books, and mandatory fees, you may be eligible for additional assistance under the Guarantee.  The Faculty of Graduate Studies will automatically determine your OSAP shortfall and notify you if you are eligible to apply for additional financial assistance under the Student Access Guarantee program.
