NHBRC Update - July 16th, 2010 - Road, Footpath and Accessible Route Closures
Posted July 16th, 2010
A major campus intersection — Meter Road at University Road — is closed to traffic until July 28 as work continues on the Niagara Health and Biosciences Research Complex. At times the work will result in noise and vibration as crews cut through bedrock to install a water main. The work will mean changes to vehicle and pedestrian routes as well as the entrance to reserved parking. For pedestrians, signs will indicate footpath detours around the site, and a temporary crosswalk has been installed on Meter Road from Parking Lot A to the sidewalk on the west side. For motorists, signs will indicate that both Meter Road and University Road are temporarily closed. As well, the pay parking on Meter Road will be reduced and accessible spaces will be designated at the west end of Parking Lot A. Access to Parking Lot A will be from Meter Road; Isaac Brock Blvd. North; and from the Glen ridge traffic circle, which is reopened now that work there is complete. The entrance into the Reserve Parking Lot A will also be restricted through July 28. It is recommended that drivers access it by using the Glenridge traffic circle and turning south into Parking Lot A, entering Reserved Lot A from the east side. The entrance/exit will be signed. NHBRC Update - July 9th - Sanitary Sewer Work - Tree Removal and Replacement - Jubilee Court
Posted July 9th, 2010
Work in Jubilee Court continues with the restoration of the landscape which includes the removal and replacement of four (4) trees. The restoration plan for Jubilee Court includes soil modifications, fine grading and replacement of damaged plant material. There will be some minor noise disruption associated with this work. Additional details on the landscape restoration plan will be communicated, as they are available.
Four trees have been removed from Jubilee Court as part of the construction of the Niagara Health and Biosciences Research Complex (NHBRC) which will be replaced with four new mature trees in the next few weeks. The mature maples were removed this week because they were damaged during the construction of a sanity sewer line. The sewer line work was necessary for construction of the new NHBRC. The work also corrects a problem with an existing sewer line. .
The initial goal was to save the trees but after consultation with an arborist it was determined that the survival rate of the four maples was low due to soil that was compacted around the roots and the trunks and numerous branches were also damaged. Due to physical limitations, the replacement trees will be smaller but they will be mature, and the largest trees possible. Their trunks will be 10 to 13 centimetres (four to five inches) in diameter. They will be planted as soon as climate conditions allow. Cooler and wetter weather is needed to plant the trees. In addition to the new trees, a maintenance program will soon be underway for the remaining trees in Jubilee Court. .
Information regarding the trees in Jubilee Court can be found at http://www.brocku.ca/brock-news/?p=4069. Regular updates on construction progress can be found at http://brocku.ca/brock-news/?page_id=3029

NHBRC Update - June 25th, 2010 - Footpath and Accessible Route Closures
Posted June 25th, 2010
Preparation work started Monday June 21st, for the new bridge, that will eventually connect Mackenzie Chown D block to the new NHBRC building, is now anticipated to be complete July 7th, 2010. The exterior pedestrian walkway, on the immediate south side of D Block against the building, will continue to be closed from 7 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and reopened outside of those hours on a daily basis. With the closure of exterior footpaths, pedestrian traffic will continue to be re-routed through the interior accessible footpath routes via the exterior entrance between D & F Blocks. Temporary accessible way finding signage has been installed to assist pedestrians accessing D Block, C Block, B Block, A Block, Taro Hall and Schmon Tower.
Hoarding has been constructed in the corridor outside of rooms D308, D322 & D321 and will stay in place until the bridge can be opened to the new building. The exterior hoarding will be completed July 7th after the demolition work, which includes saw-cutting on the precast panel and glass removal, is complete on the outside of the building. From now until the end of day July 7th noise and vibration disruptions will be experienced in MacKenzie Chown D Block and the buildings in close proximity to this area. Click here to view map. NHBRC Update - June 18th, 2010 - Footpath and Accessible Route Closures
Posted June 18th, 2010
Starting Monday June 21st to Monday June 28th preparation work for the new bridge to be installed that will connect MacKenzie Chown D Block to the new NHBRC building will begin. This work includes removal of the exterior glass and cladding on the face of the building on the south west side of D Block. Preparation work will occur in two phases: one phase on the exterior of the building and the next phase on the interior 300 level of D Block.
To accommodate this work, a hoarding wall 15 feet long and 5 to 6 inches deep will be installed in the 300 level corridor outside of rooms D308, D322 & D321. No disruptions to traffic flow are anticipated due to the hoarding wall as pedestrian traffic will be maintained. This hoarding wall will stay in place until the new bridge is constructed and the new entranceway to NHBRC is opened. The new bridge will be a free standing structure allowing work to be completed in advance of the building completion. Noise and vibration disruptions will be experienced in the buildings in close proximity to this area.
In addition to the interior work and to ensure safety, the exterior pedestrian walkway on the immediate south side of D Block that is against the building, will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting Monday June 21st to Monday June 28th. This walkway will be reopened daily after 5:00 p.m. to allow access during the evening until 7:00 a.m. On the exterior the glass and cladding will be removed, exposing the steel structure. A second hoarding will be installed on the exterior which will stay in place until work on the bridge begins. This exterior work must be completed with the use of a crane to remove the heavy panels so the walkway will not be usable during contractor work hours to ensure pedestrian safety.
The footpath south of the D Block building walkway, which currently allows access along the front of D, C & B Blocks and swings south towards the NHBRC building, then back directly north towards D Block will be removed to accommodate other associated building work. Pedestrian access will no longer be available. During the week of Monday June 21st to Monday June 28th with the closure of both D Block exterior footpaths, pedestrian traffic that will need to access these buildings will be redirected to use the exterior entrance between D & F Blocks to use interior pedestrian routes for this 4 day period. After Monday June 28th, the D Block footpath against the building will be reopened and will allow access from the exterior to D, C & B Blocks. Directional signage will be installed to show Accessible routes through buildings from D Block through to A Block, Taro, Thistle and Schmon Tower. Click here to view map.

Campus Wide Power Shut Down Friday May 21st 10:00 p.m. to Saturday May 22nd at 10:00 a.m.
Posted October 21, 2009
To ensure a reliable electrical distribution to the Brock University Campus, Facilities Management is planning a FULL Campus electrical shut down for Friday May 21st 2010. This shut down will take place Friday May 21st, 2010 starting at 10:00 p.m. and will be completed by Saturday May 22nd at 10:00 a.m. This Campus shut down will allow for a much needed second campus electrical feed to sustain the growing University. The energy demand and occupancy is at it’s lowest during the month of May and for this reason the date has been picked for May 21st. Planning of any events especially events that require accommodation of large groups or activities are to be avoided during this time since there will be no power except for critical areas of the Campus during this time. Lab experiments should also be reduced to critical research only. Industry standards require that preventative maintenance on electrical substations be completed in recommended intervals of 12 to 36 months to ensure a reliable electrical distribution system. To complete this we are implementing a 10 year maintenance program to address all fourteen main substations through out the University.

H1N1 Flu Awareness & Preparedness Situation
Posted September 2, 2009
The Emergency Response Team (ERT) has been activated to provide operational level emergency management of this emerging emergency and is following the University’s Emergency Management Plan and the generic draft Medical Emergency Response Plan. It is meeting weekly. Domenic Maniccia is the lead Facilities Management Director on the ERT. The ERT will advise or inform the University’s Crisis Management Group (CMG) on recommendations impacting one or more of the University’s Divisions, students, and visitors as well as on matters beyond the authority of the ERT. Flu rates continue to decline since the May/June 2009 peak however it is expected that a second wave is very probable in the October period following the end of summer as schools, universities, colleges, workplaces all ramp up along with the traditional start of seasonal flu season.
The University has established a website that will keep Faculty, Staff, Students, and the Public up to date on the subject. Please visit this link

Horizon Utilities Helps Business Customers Go Green and Stay in the Black
Posted March 31, 2009
Over the last year Facilities Management has been investing in energy savings projects to further reduce the University’s energy use and replace aging infrastructure. One of Facilities Management’s projects has been converting T12 florescent lights to more energy efficient T8’s. Facilities Management has taken advantage of the Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP) through the University’s local utility (Horizon Utilities) to change over 4,000 T12 lamps. The change over has yielded an average energy savings of 33% saving the University over $40,000 a year coupled with a retrofit incentive of over $12,000 from the ERIP program. All these projects help the University reduce energy use and save money while enabling Facilities Management to retrofit aging infrastructure in a cost efficient way.
