Thirty years ago the “Crazy
Canucks” were winning world cup downhill ski races, Pierre Trudeau was
in his first term as Prime Minister, and the Americans faced defeat
in Vietnam. At that same time, in borrowed old hockey sweaters proudly
emblazoned with BROCK in six inch high letters, the first Brock Badger
rugby team stepped onto a converted soccer pitch in St. Catharines.
We are now entering our second century of rugby at Brock University,
and you are an important part of that history.
Join your team mates and fellow
Old Badgers on November 3rd and 4th, 2000 in St. Catharines for the 30th
Anniversary Reunion. Festivities begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening
at Hallett’s Coach House with a meet and greet pub. Built in 1875, Hallett’s
Coach House is at 315 Merritt Street in St. Catharines [phone 905-227-5761
if you get lost]. Take the Glendale Avenue exit off Highway 406 and travel
east to the ‘T’ intersection, turn left at the light onto Merritt Street,
and look to your left for the Hallett’s sign. There’s parking on the site
or next door at the bank. If you get to the bridge, you've gone too far!
You can pick up your souvenir order at Hallett’s that evening, and watch
rugby on the tube while you get reacquainted.
On Saturday at the rugby pitch
at Brock, the Old Badger Women challenge the Women's Varsity at 12:00
noon, the Old Badger Masters (over 30, more or less) rumble at 1:00 p.m.,
and the more competitive Old Badgers kick off against the Men's Varsity
at 2:00 p.m. If you intend to play rugby you should be at the Physical
Education Complex a minimum of one hour before your match begins, for
taping, prayers, snide remarks, and assignment of positions. Be sure to
let us know you want to play.
There will be plenty of parking
available on campus in the main lot. There have been a few changes at
Brock in the last five years, so leave yourself some extra time to walk
around and see what's new. Don't forget your boots, shorts, socks, jersey
and warm up gear! The weather does not always cooperate, but the matches
will run whether there is rain, snow or bright sunshine. We hope you can
join us to play or just watch.
After the matches we will reconvene
at Hallett’s rugby headquarters for an old-fashioned rugby social. For
$10.00 each we’ll enjoy a hearty buffet dinner. A cash bar will be open
and there will be rugby on the screens. Bring your best singing voice
and a camera with flash. Once again we’ll be holding an auction to raise
money for the bursary fund, so don’t forget your chequebook. It should
be a memorable evening.
