Status: Partially completed

Location: This rail trail lies in the northwest quadrant of Welland. It extends from the Welland River north- west to Pelham's boundary. Less formally, the trail continues north to Alexander Street in Fonthill. Two main sections exist in Welland: the first between Thorold Road and Woodlawn Road, and the second between Thorold Road and Pitch Street (along Prince Charles Drive). Remaining sections of the trail comprise less formal linkages.

Length: 4.4 km

History: This route was formerly the NS&T Welland Line. From May 1908 to March 1959, it transported passengers via electric train between Welland and Fonthill.

The two main sections of the present- day trail were completed by 1987. The first took four years of planning and implementation and was part of the Ontario Neighbourhood Improvement Program. The second was improved by the Welland Public Works Division in 1987 and 1988.

Surface Features and facilities: Mainly stone dust. The first section's entry and exit points are marked. The first section also has park benches along its course, is partially lighted, and is accessible by wheelchairs and strollers.

Recreational Use: All non- motorized uses are permitted: e.g. walking, cycling, cross-country skiing, jogging.

Significant Features:

cultural The second section lies adjacent to commercial office complexes and a plaza.

ownership and Management:: City of Welland, Development Services Department (Planning Division). The Community Services Department (Parks and Cemetery Division) maintains the trails. A portion of trail (in the second section) is maintained by Canadian Tire Acceptance Corporation adjacent to it.

Greenway Linkages: There are future plans to formalize and develop the linkage to the Steve Bauer Trails in Fonthill.
