Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)

This aquatic shrub is 3-10' (90-300cm) in length with small, white, tubular flowers about 1/3" (8mm) long, densely aggregated in spherical peduncled heads 11/2" (3.8cm) in diameter, collectively forming globose "balls". The leaves are 3-6" (7.5-15cm) long, opposite or whorled, ovate, lancelot or elliptic, untoothed, dark green above, stout light yellow below with long white hairs. This species is noted for its ability to withstand flood conditions and is usually found in swamps and along streams. The fruits of this bush tend to be found appealing to mallard ducks.
