Teaching with Technology Showcase provides hands-on learning

On Friday, January 25, the Faculty of Education hosted the 5th annual Teaching with Technology showcase at Brock’s Hamilton Campus.

Designed to inform educators (current and future) about the technologies that are available and how they can used in the classroom, the Showcase created a buzz amongst participants and presenters.

“It is encouraging to see so many educators interested in furthering their understanding of technology can be used to enhance student learning,” said event coordinator and associate professor Dr. Camille Rutherford. “The showcase is also an opportunity for a number of teacher candidates to deliver workshops that provide educators with practical examples of how integrate technology into their classroom practice and watching these teacher candidates demonstrate their EdTech leadership is very exciting and speaks highly of their potential to transform education once they enter the profession.”

Excellence award for education professor

hillary brown

The only person who didn’t feel entirely at ease with Hilary Brown winning the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for early career faculty was Brown herself.

Despite the comments from students describing Brown, an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education, as the quintessential teacher who inspires, is passionate and authentic, the accolades given at a reception Tuesday aren’t what motivates her.

“Truthfully, awards make me uneasy,” Brown said. “I teach the way I do because it comes from the inside out and this is an award that’s external to that process. But I’m happy for the award because it comes from the comments of students.”

The number of men in ECE roles is on the rise

men in ece

It’s a man’s world. It’s a woman’s world. It’s a mix of the two. Sometimes it’s just too blurry of a line to distinguish.

While most traditional gender roles have been challenged and subsequently eradicated, there is still difficulty in denying that, when it comes to certain areas of work, there is gender inequality.

Concurrent Education student wins first place prize in Samsung's National Leadership Program

Just after our last newsletter went out in the Fall, we found out about the great work this student was doing - so while it' is a little dated, it is none the less very impressive work!

When you take into account lectures, seminars and subsequent homework that stems from each, a student's life can be hectic enough, never mind the extracurricular activities they participate in.

However, for 4th year concurrent education student Krissa Donahue, she was able to find time - between her homework, her jobs and her volunteering - to make a significant difference in her community.

"During the past month and half I have raised awareness about my work as a leader, promoted Brock University, its student life as well as prepared and hosted an even," she said.

The event Donahue organized took place at Westmount Public School, where she kick-started their Halloween for Hunger campaign, donating 471 cans of food.

Arts Matter conference educates and inspires

arts matter

Three years ago, amongst a decline in funding for the arts and subsequent participation in the classroom, Drs. Shelley Griffin, Peter Vietgen and Kari-Lynn Winters came up with a vision that would help their teacher candidates further extend experiences in dance, music, drama and visual arts into their teacher education arts curriculum.

Having just finished its third year, the annual Arts Matter: Integrating the Arts Across the Curriculum conference was once again a rousing success; with close to 200 registrants participating in the two-day workshop.

Assistant professor launches new children's book

kari-lynn winters

UPDATE: Kari-Lynn's book has recently been shortlisted for the BC Book Prizes!

Kari-Lynn Winters latest children’s book, Gift Days, could not have been more appropriately titled.

Launched in early November at Brock University’s Hamilton campus, the book is about a young African girl, Nassali, who dreams of an education, but due to the circumstances of having to take care of the household and raise her younger siblings, it simply was not an option – until she received a gift from her brother.

And much like the gift Nassali received in the book, 10 Ugandan girls will be receiving a similar gift.

“It was beyond my expectations,” said Winters of the book launch. “We raised enough money to send 10 Ugandan children to school for a full year.”

BECE international internship a life-changing experience

africa internship

When you imagine the setting of a student internship it is usually that of a timid hopeful, tucked away in some office cubicle, cut off from the true excitement and grandeur of the job they hope to one day possess.

But for a group of students in their final year of the BECE program their internship took them beyond an office cubicle and all the way to South Africa.

  Out of the ordinary

Following in the footsteps of a fellow Faculty of Education professor, Dr. Mary-Louise Vanderlee was recently appointed an Extraordinary Professor in the School of Education at North-West University in South Africa.

“I am both honoured and delighted, to be receiving such a prestigious appointment,” said Vanderlee. “[I] very much look forward to strengthening avenues for collaboration in research, teaching, and service among the students and faculty affiliated with both the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education honours degree program at Brock and the Foundation Phase program at North-West University, Potchefstroom campus.”

Part of Vanderlee’s responsibilities will fall under the research endeavours of the Early Childhood Development-Reading Literacy research group, which will includes visits to North-West University for research-related lectures, and interaction with students.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging in developing articles with colleagues in the field;
  • Fostering the internationalism process of the research group;
  • Engaging in collaboration in international projects;
  • Contributing to academic discourses in research group and faculty;
  • Acting, if requested, as an external examiner for post-graduate students.

When it comes to what she looks forward to most, Vanderlee says it’s the discussions with colleagues that has her most excited.

  BECE Award

Sana Siddiqui wins BECE award

Niagara’s Early Learning and Child Care Awards of Excellence took place recently and Brock University’s Sana Siddiqui was among the winners.

Held at the Holiday Inn & Suites on Ontario Street in St. Catharines, over 300 guests attended the gala in which Siddiqui was honoured with the inaugural Bachelor of Early Childhood Education Outstanding Student award.

The award, which recognizes a student who has demonstrated the standards of practice and ethics of care in both their academic pursuits and their contributions to the early childhood community, is similar to Niagara College’s Margaret Hamilton Student Award which has long been a part of the Awards of Excellence.

“Students were invited to nominate someone in their final year of the BECE program and the compelling examples of Sana’s professionalism and positive attitude won the committee over,” said Dr. Mary-Louise Vanderlee. “In their nominations, her peers shared stories of how dedicated Sana is to her studies as well as how she was able to overcome the obstacles of immigrating to Canada, which included the need to learn English.”

But it wasn’t just how hard she worked in order to succeed in her studies, it extended beyond the classroom as well.

“Importantly, students also commented on Sana’s dedication to supporting children with unique needs back home and how she tirelessly contributes hours of time tutoring children in her community each weekend,” said Vanderlee. “ The endless support offered to her peers was clearly appreciated as was her always visible warm smile. With her father present, Sana humbly came up to the stage to receive her award. The smile on her face said it all. We are delighted that Sana was the first recipient of the outstanding student award.

Coordinated by the Early Childhood Community Development Centre and the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario over 60 local Registered Early Childhood Educators, program staff, volunteers, full day early learning programs, and students were recognized.
