Matt Buell ‘03: Graduate Studies in Classical Archaeology
Matt is currently a PhD candidate in Classical Archaeology at the University of Buffalo. Since graduating from Brock he has been involved in several archaeological projects including field director for the Kourion Mapping Project on Cyprus from 2005-2008 and field supervisor for the Galatas Survey Project on Crete since 2005. He has also worked as a field archaeologist for an archaeological firm based in Oakville, ON since 2001.
Mark Hammond ‘03: Graduate Studies in Classical Archaeology
Mark has completed an MA in Classical Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and is now working on his PhD. In 2008/09, he was a Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece. Mark praises the opportunities he had at Brock to participate in archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean, including working as a trench supervisor, and the chance to acquire first-hand experience with material remains through the department's collection of Cypriote antiquities.
Nikki Jago ‘08: Museum Studies
Nikki is currently enrolled at the University of Toronto in a Masters program in Museum Studies with plans to pursue her interests in museum environment and collections management following her studies. Through overseas opportunities, Nikki developed a passion for archaeology and conservation, first in the Archaeological Practicum in 2006 in Crete followed by summer employment in Bodrum, Turkey in 2007 and 2008 where she learned conservation techniques on Greek pottery from an archaic shipwreck off the Turkish coast.
Cameron Kroetsch ‘07: Graduate Studies in Classical Languages and Literatures
Though he began as an English major, Cameron caught the Classics bug after his first Greek mythology course at Brock and soon switched into Classics full-time. After completing his BA in 2007, Cameron attended the University of Toronto where he finished a Bachelor of Education in spring 2008. Currently he is in the second year of the MA program in Classics at the University of Western Ontario researching customs related to Roman funerals.
Hilary McCarthy ‘99: Forensic Archaeology
Hilary has recently completed her Masters of Science in Forensic Archaeological Science at the University College in London, England. She plans to seek employment with the National Health Service as an anatomical pathology technician where she would assist forensic pathologists in conducting autopsies, working in conjunction with the coroner and the police in aiding bereaved families. She lists small class sizes, the variety of subjects offered, and the approachability of the professors as the department's best features.
John McCarthy ‘99: High school teaching in London, England
After graduating from Brock with a BA in Classics, John worked as a teaching assistant for the department and discovered his love of teaching. He completed an MSc in Science and Education in 2005 at Niagara University near Niagara Falls, New York and is now a full-time teacher and Deputy Head of Year at Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School in Shadwell, East London.
Vicki Moles ‘04: Elementary and secondary school teaching in Ontario
Vicki completed a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Western Ontario and now teaches a variety of subjects including English and Drama for grades 7, 8, and 10 contract positions, and as a supply teacher for all levels of elementary and secondary school. She credits her experience working as a teaching assistant and her involvement in BUAS's outreach program to local schools for helping to prepare her for a career in teaching.
Jennifer Phenix ‘04: Publishing
After her BA in Classical Languages at Brock, Jennifer completed an MA in Greek and Latin Literature at the University of Toronto then taught courses on classical mythology at Sheridan College in the Liberal Arts Department and on women in classical literature at the University of Toronto-Mississauga. Most recently, she has worked as Vice President of Franchise Operations at a publishing company, having begun there as assistant to the Chief Operations Officer.
Paul Ritchie ‘08: Cultural Resource Management
Paul is currently working for the Archaeological Assessments Ltd. firm doing Cultural Resource Management in southern Ontario where he has worked on a wide variety of sites dating from the early archaic period through to the 19th century. The job has provided great archaeological experience and the opportunity to practice excavation techniques learned on the Archaeological Practicum on Crete in 2006. In fall 2009, Paul will begin an MA in Aegean Prehistory at the University of Sheffield, England.
Tina Ross ‘04: Archaeological illustration
Tina works as an archaeological illustrator preparing digital drawings for publication for three projects in Greece. After completing an MA in Classical Archaeology at the University of Victoria, Tina returned to Brock as a teaching assistant in 2007/08 then spent the summer in Greece beginning her work as an illustrator. At Brock, Tina had an opportunity to participate in the Archaeological Practicum which was “as much fun as it was work” and led to her involvement in other projects in Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey.
Heather Wellock: ‘07: Library and Information Science
Heather recently completed her MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) at the University of Western Ontario and is currently fulfilling a placement at Brock University’s Gibson Library. Her goal is to become a professional librarian in an academic library. She singles out two opportunities from her undergraduate studies as particularly beneficial during her graduate degree: her experience as a teaching assistant which helped with presentation skills, and her work with retired Brock professor David Rupp in Kouklia, Cyprus re-housing and cataloguing artifacts in the Kouklia Museum in the summer of 2005.
