Les prix

The Caribou Cup is the sum of our six contests in each school year. Each student can participate in each contest and at the end of the school year we will form our Caribou Cup Standings. If you are from BC, please see below for our BC specific prize courtesy of the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS).
  • The contestants with the most points in their best five contests for each grade group (3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12) in the school year 2012/13 will be awarded prizes. Additional prizes will be funded purely from the income of the donation web page.

  • The prizes will be awarded by the following scheme: A student will accumulate points throughout the year. At the end of the year, the number of points achieved in the best 5 contests will be divided by the total possible number of points in 5 contests. For example, suppose the student takes part in 6 contests and earns 384 points in the best 5 of the 6 contests and the total number of points possible in 5 contests is 5 x 96 = 480, then the ratio is (384 / 480) = 0.80. If the student takes part in 4 contests and earns in total 255 points then the ratio is (255 / 480) = 0.5315. The weights for each prize are shown below where points is the earned points and total_points is the total possible number of points in contests.

  • Prizes will be awarded using this scheme until the purse is used completely. Minimum prizes are $10 for students, $15 for schools. The purse for each grade group are the following (subject to change).
  • Années 3 et 4 - $300

  • Années 7 et 8 - $300
  • Années 9 et 10 - $300
  • Années 11 et 12 - $300

BC Specific Prize

For the 2012/2013 Caribou Cup, we are pleased to offer an additional prize for our BC students. PIMS has generously offered a prize to the top 5 students in BC, one for each grade group. The top ranking BC student in the Caribou Cup after the 5th contest in April for each grade group (3/4, 5/6, ...) will be invited, expenses paid, to join PIMS for the written math contest ELMACON that is held at the University of British Columbia in May 2013. This is a written contest with several stages over the day and is an excellent program for BC students.

Brock University Caribou Scholarship

The Brock University Caribou Scholarship is an award of up to $2,500 that will be offered to every incoming first-year student, entering any program of study, who have competed in the grade 11/12 category of the Brock University Caribou Mathematics Competition and have placed in the top third of Caribou Cup competitors with a maximum for the total of $10,000 to be shared between all eligible students. Applicants must provide a copy of their Certificate of Merit to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office, indicating that they have achieved the minimum result. The results will be confirmed by a representative of the Brock University Caribou Mathematics Competition. Please contact awards@brocku.ca for more information.
