BIOGRAPHY
Anne Szumigalski was born in London, England in 1922. During the war she served as an interpreter and welfare officer with the British Red Cross Civilian Relief organization. In 1951, she immigrated to Canada, settling in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where she was instrumental in the founding of both the Saskatchewan Writer's Guild and the literary journal Grain. She is appreciated for having been a mentor to many young poets of the region. Her poetry collections include Woman Reading in Bath (194), A Game of Angels (1980) and Rapture of the Deep (1991). In 1995, Szumigalski was awarded the Governor General's Award for Poetry for Voice. Szumigalski died in 1999, and since that time, Grain has established the annual The Anne Szumigalski Editor's Prize, to be awarded in her memory.
