Kay Smith was born in St. John, New Brunswick in 1911. She studied drama and theatre at both Mount Allison University and at Columbia University. For thirty years, Smith taught English and Drama at Saint John Vocational School, a New Brunswick high school, and taught several writing workshops at the University of New Brunswick. In 1988, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from UNB. Smith is a Life member of the League of Canadian Poets.
