BIOGRAPHY
Elizabeth Smart was born in Ottawa in 1913. She attended Canadian private schools, and for a year, was sent to King's College in London, England, where she studied piano. Famous for her poetic prose, Smart's novel By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept (1945) was immensely popular, reprinted at least five times during her lifetime. Smart eventually retired to a quiet life in Suffolk, England, returning to Canada from 1982-1983, where she served as writer-in-residence at the University of Alberta. Elizabeth Smart died in 1986.
