BIOGRAPHY
Rita Joe, now a Mi’kmaq elder, was born in 1931 on the Whycocomagh Reserve in Nova Scotia. Her poetry and activism have made her a symbol of Native pride. She has been awarded numerous honourary doctorates from Canadian universities. Rita Joe currently lives on the Eskasoni reserve in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
