Research: population genetics of insect pathogenic fungi, fungal root colonization

Mike Bidochka is an avid collector, but it’s not comic books, stamps or hockey cards that has captured his interest.

Bidochka’s laboratory contains the largest collection of insect-pathogenic fungi in Canada. An estimated 1,000 tubes containing different species of fungi are an integral part of his research to better understand these particular fungi, also known as pathogens.

Research in Bidochka’s fungal pathogenetics laboratory focuses on obtaining knowledge on the basic biology and molecular genetics of insect pathogenic fungi in order to use these existing microorganisms to control insect pests found on crops rather than using chemical pesticides.
