Research: organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis

Confucius said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Georgii Nikonov would argue that the creation of a better reaction begins with a single molecule.

Nikonov’s focus on organometallic chemistry involves the study of chemical compounds containing bonds between carbon and a metal. His research team carries out an extensive program in molecular catalysis, allowing for a more efficient and greener synthesis of organic molecules.

Nikonov’s research promotes the improved design of catalysts — substances that increase the rate of a chemical reaction or process. His group’s work has many useful applications within industry, and the technological innovations brought about by his research will play a key role in the transition toward a knowledge-based economy. Nikonov also studies the synthesis of new highly reactive transition metal hydrid complexes for application in various types of catalytic reactions, many of which have enormous potential in industrial processes.

Nikonov’s research is based on intensive knowledge transfer and training of highly qualified personnel. This research requires the modern advanced equipment and adequate research facilities that the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex will provide.
