Brian Jeynes: Associate Professor of Pathology and Anatomy, Applied Health Sciences

More than 500,000 Canadians currently live with Alzheimer’s disease. Brian Jeynes’ intends to reduce that number.

Jeynes’ research involves investigating cerebral microvascular disease in dementia-related illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease. He is particularly interested in the role of the blood-brain barrier. Using samples of both human normative and Alzheimer brains, Jeynes’ team collects quantitative data using light microscopic immunohistochemical techniques. The imaging data are analyzed statistically, comparing the presence of Alzheimer lesions with the expression of capillary vasoregulatory proteins and endothelial proteins associated with the influx and efflux of beta-amyloid isoforms into and out of the brain across the blood-brain barrier.

His work is directed at determining the origin as well as the chain of events leading to Alzheimer’s disease and informing further research into identifying improved therapeutic treatments. Jeynes is also interested in research into the practice of health ethics. He teaches human functional anatomy and human pathology.

The Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex will enhance the research capability of Jeynes’ team through providing imaging analysis laboratory space and enhanced image analysis equipment. In addition, the availability of a laboratory teaching facility will enhance the undergraduate, graduate and medical education and training that is taking place.
