Brock’s intramural program receives provincial recognition

The Ontario chapter of the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) has recognized Brock’s intramural program with an Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award. This is the sixth year the University’s program has brought home this accolade. The award, which has the motto “Fun, Active Participation for All,” recognizes student leadership opportunities provided within intramural programs in Ontario.

Today’s Convocation ceremonies for both the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and Faculty of Applied Health Sciences featured more than 800 students receiving their degrees and certificates from Brock. One of those students, Rachel Chouinard, took a break from her current job in Toronto as an exploration geologist to take in her graduation today.

Brock staff will be able to snag their annual parking passes online starting next week. They will be available on Wednesday, June 11 at 10 a.m. by logging onto brocku.ca/parking (Online Services). Walk-up purchases will be available Monday, June 23 at 10 a.m. at the Parking Services office.

Brock student wins provincial contest for Cope Care Connect initiative

A third-year Brock Health Sciences student, Kaitlyn Kerridge, has taken first prize in a province-wide competition that challenged students to use social media to help boost mental health at university campuses across Ontario. Her winning entry in the Mental Health 2.0 student social media contest stemmed from a class project in which students developed a comprehensive social marketing campaign called Cope-Care-Connect.

Brock University is saddened by the loss of Qandeel Shaikh, a third year Bachelor of Business Administration Co-op (Honours) student who passed away March 10, 2014. The Brock community extends its condolences to Shaikh’s family and friends.

Bell Let’s Talk supports mental health initiatives at Brock University

Earlier this week, Brock University received a $25,000 grant from the Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund to support an online mental health training module for students at the University. The online module will help to educate students about mental health issues, how to identify and address the early signs, and what services are available. The initiative will also help to reduce the stigma attached to mental health issues by engaging students and highlighting peer experiences.

Brock is hosting a mental health awareness week for students this week. The week’s worth of events will feature displays and activities across campus that talk to and get students talking about recognizing the signs of mental health problems and where to get help for themselves and friends.

This week is Fair Trade Campus Week and Brock University is celebrating by becoming Canada’s sixth Fair Trade Campus - second in Ontario after Guelph - to be designated by Fairtrade Canada. The campus designation was made possible by the hard work of the Brock Fair Trade Club student group, and the University’s and Brock University Students’ Union’s (BUSU) food services operators.
