After working around the clock Easter weekend to restore power to the University, Brock’s Department of Facilities Management is preparing for planned shutdowns in the coming weeks.

Brock improves waste diversion by five per cent

Brock has increased its University-wide waste diversion rate by five per cent. According to its annual waste audit for 2013, Brock generated 1.94-million kilograms of solid non-hazardous waste. Of this total, the University diverted 65.3 per cent of this waste - or more than 1.26-million kilograms - from ending up in landfills.

Parts of Brock to go dark Saturday for Earth Hour

Earth Hour is Saturday, March 29, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. As in past years, parts of the University will go dark in support of this annual worldwide event. All of the lights in parking lots T, U and V, as well as the lights on the University’s main entrance sign, will go dark for the hour on Saturday night. The majority of non-emergency lights in the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex will also be turned off. The same goes for the Walker Complex, Union Station

And as part of this week’s lead up to Earth Hour, the University will also be unveiling a couple of new sustainability initiatives on campus.

49,807 and counting: Brock initiative helps reduce plastic water bottle waste

Brock’s students’ union and administration have partnered on an initiative this fall that has, so far, kept nearly 50,000 plastic water bottles from ending up in landfill. Earlier this year, the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) purchased eight new water bottle filling stations and Facilities Management purchased one of these units for the University.

Next time you’re in the areas of St. Catharines or Thorold and the battery in your electric vehicle is running low roll into Brock University for a charge. The University recently installed its first electric vehicle charger (EVC) by the main entrance to the International Centre at its east campus in St. Catharines, Ont.
