Brock University student-athletes will benefit from $75,000 raised Thursday during the 13th annual President’s Golf Tournament.

More than 140 golfers joined Brock University President Jack Lightstone at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls for the annual tournament in support of Brock Athletics.

“I want to thank all of the sponsors and participants who share in our goal of providing financial support for our extraordinary student-athletes,” said Brock University President Dr. Jack Lightstone. “These young men and women juggle academics, athletics and community service. Their commitment, discipline and engagement are inspirational.”

During the event, Brock University also honoured tournament founder David S. Howes, who passed away in January, and recognized his outstanding contribution in making the tournament the success it is today.

The $75,000 raised goes into awards and financial support for the University’s student-athletes. The tournament also surpassed the $1 million dollar mark in total fundraising with over 900 awards distributed since 2003. Proceeds are raised through golf fees and support from sponsors.

“We would like to thank all the individuals and businesses that have helped to support our talented student-athletes with their generous contributions to this special university event,” said Tournament Chair Rudi Kroeker. “Today we not only raised dollars for our student-athletes but we recognized and honoured our founder David S. Howes for his contribution to Brock University and the tournament.”

Brock University has a rich tradition of athletic excellence. In its history, the Badgers have captured 35 national and 70 provincial championships in a wide variety of sports. Brock currently has teams in 38 sports – 18 men’s and 20 women’s programs.

“The proceeds from this tournament are instrumental to achieving our mandate of ‘Building Champions’ and enables our student-athletes to work toward excellence in both academics and athletics,” said Rob Cargnelli, Interim Director of Athletics and Recreation.

“As student-athletes, we are extremely grateful for the financial support we receive from the President’s Golf Tournament,” says Brock women’s volleyball player Karlinna O’Leary. “It allows us to strive for excellence in both our athletics and academics. The money received truly impacts the success we are able to achieve as student-athletes.”
