Surviving the seasonal climate change at Brock

The seasons are changing again here at Brock.

As temperatures rise during the daytime, the University faces the tough dilemma of managing how to both heat and cool its buildings. Facilities Management staff are busy preparing the main campus cooling systems at the central chilling plant for summer operation.

However, it’s not summer just yet.

Due to the type of heating and cooling system used here at Brock, many buildings aren’t capable of heating and cooling during the same cycle. With the arrival of unseasonably warm temperatures during the day yet nighttime temperatures remaining below 10°C, building heating at this time of year must remain a priority.

Facilities Management staff are actively attempting to bring fresh cool air into areas normally controlled by the central chilling plant during the day.
As the ongoing temperature battle continues, departments that experience above average temperatures are encouraged to refrain from operating any heat producing equipment that isn’t necessary, and are asked to shut off any lighting that is not required. Those with windows in their office are encouraged to keep blinds closed when possible, keeping out radiant heat.

It’s a mere matter of weeks until summer is upon us. By then all buildings will be artificially cooled for maximum comfort. Until that time, please use patience and follow the previously mentioned tips as the seasonal transition continues.
