Brock men’s rowing team wins OUA gold

Brock University captured its second provincial athletics championship in less than one week after the men’s rowing team won gold this past weekend in St. Catharines.

The Badgers finished with 410 points Saturday at Henley Island, beating Western (372) and Queen’s (201) for the Ontario University Athletics title. They will travel west this weekend for the national championships in Victoria, B.C. on Nov. 1.

Brock’s women’s rowing team placed third overall. The impressive results came six days after Brock’s men’s baseball team defeated Queen’s for its fourth OUA championship.

“I am very proud of how hard both our men’s and women’s programs worked all season,” Brock rowing head coach Peter Somerwil said. “It’s a great accomplishment for our men to win the OUA championship. Our women’s team is a very talented young squad with a very bright future.”

The Brock men captured three gold in total, winning the lightweight four, lightweight eight and heavyweight four.

In the men’s lightweight four, Taylor Ashwood, James Potts, Grayson Gray, James Myers and coxswain Amy Maclean won in 6:25.8.

In the men’s lightweight eight, Ashwood, Potts, Myers, Austin Cameron, Bryan Haakman, Michael Brunton, Zachary Whiteley, Eric Buchanan and MacLean as the coxswain defeated Western by just over a second in 5:35.2.

In the men’s heavyweight four, Matthew Wortley, Will Bryden, Matthew Finley, David De Groot and coxswain Earl Cabaluna captured gold in 6:02.0.

The Badgers men also finished second in the lightweight 1x (Grayson Gray – 6:55.6), heavyweight 2x (Justin Buttigieg and Jacob Thomas – 6:33.4) and heavyweight eight (Brandon D’orazio, Zachary Lewis, Patrick Branch, Lucien Brodeur, Wortley, Bryden, Finley, De Groot and Cabaluna – 5:50.3).

The Brock women’s crews took home three medals, capturing bronze in the lightweight eight (Sarah Mambella, Samantha Augustine, Lauren Piedl, Katie Booth, Jen Beaudette, Katie Ayres, Elizabeth Fuller, Naseem Majzoubi and coxswain Laura Court – 6:40.8), lightweight four (Beaudette, Lindsay MacLean, Katherine Walker, Emma Sheehan and Court – 6:40.6) and lightweight 1x (Katherine Walker).
