Rick Welland, associate professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics, is raising money to help conquer cancer by participating in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, which benefits the Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

On June 8 and 9, he will join thousands of other men and women in a two-day, 200-plus kilometre ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls.

Riders’ donations will support breakthrough research and the discovery of new cancer therapies at the Princess Margaret Hospital, benefitting all Ontarians.

With one in three Canadians diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, Welland is rallying for the cause and is cycling in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer because as a speech-language pathologist for more 30 years, he has worked with many clients who have had various forms of cancer, such as cancer of the larynx or voice box, cancer of the tongue, brain tumours.

His grandfather and an aunt both succumbed to cancer and his uncle is currently working hard to overcome the debilitating effects of cancer of the spinal cord.

Welland’s financé was successfully treated for a rare form of bladder cancer in 2012. Despite having just six weeks to recuperate from that surgery, she rallied for the cause and embarked on her own Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer in June of that year, completing all but the last 20 kilometres of the ride.

Welland, participant #570173-7, has set a personal fundraising goal of $2,500. To help him reach or exceed this goal, make a donation online, or call 877.699.BIKE.

This is the sixth annual Ride to Conquer Cancer event in Toronto. Visit the website for more information or call 877.699.BIKE. All riders need is a bike, a helmet and a little motivation.
