Brock University is saddened by the death of Alun Hughes, a retired associate professor of Geography.

Hughes started at Brock in 1969, teaching cartography, surveying, remote sensing and GIS. He also coached Brock’s rugby team. Hughes retired in 2012.

He died Thursday, following a lengthy illness. Hughes was 71.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Hughes’s family and friends at this time.

The family will receive visitors at the Haine Funeral Home and Chapel, 26 Ormond St. South in Thorold on Tuesday, May 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service to celebrate Hughes’s life will be held at Silver Spire United Church, 366 St. Paul St., St. Catharines, on Wednesday, May 15 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Hughes’s family would appreciate contributions to a fund established in his honour with Brock’s special collections and archives for the acquisition of materials relating to the history of the Niagara Peninsula. Donations can be directed to Brock’s library.

That’s sad. A knowledgeable man who contributed a lot to Niagara.

I always enjoyed talking to Alun. My husband (also a retired Brock employee) and I participated in a couple of trips that Alun lead as part of the annual employee wellness day and appreciated his knowledge of local history. He was one of a kind! Our deepest condolences.

I will never forget the first time I met Alun, he was speaking at the Wellness Conference on the history of the Brock University land purchase and everyone in the room was on the edge of their seats! He told the story with great intensity and drama and the surprise twist ending was so entertaining - and he seemed to really enjoy himself! I walked out of that room and thought, what an amazing teacher, where do I sign up?
