St. Catharines lawyer Dave Edwards, a former Brock University trustee and chair of the board, has been appointed a Superior Court judge.

Edwards, who joins the bench in Brampton, was one of six new judges assigned to courts across the country by the federal government last week.

A lawyer with Lancaster Brooks and Welch in St. Catharines since 1979, Edwards has been a certified specialist in corporate and commercial law since 2005. His other areas of practice are commercial, corporate, estates, real estate and administrative law.

He was admitted to the bar in 1977 after receiving his Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall. He obtained a Master of Laws degree in 2012.

Edwards has been a member of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission since 2004. He has served as vice-chair since 2011.

He was a Brock trustee from 1994 to 2005, board chair from 2000 to 2003 and was named Trustee Emeritus in 2008.

Edwards was instrumental in bringing President Jack Lightstone to Brock, on whose watch the university has gone through remarkable growth.

In addition, Edwards is a member of the Rotary Club of St. Catharines and a past member of its board.

He and his wife, Mary Ann, plan to keep their home in St. Catharines.

Mary Ann, who is director of the Rankin Cancer Run, will remain at the helm of the event, which has raised $3.229 million since the first run seven years ago.

This year’s run, which saw 10,000 people participate, raised $725,000.
