Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold asked the Brock community for 400 toys for local children this Christmas.

By the end of the annual Adopt an Angel campaign hosted by the Campus Store, faculty, staff and students delivered more than 550 gifts instead.

This despite having less time to collect the toys and more recipients in need than in previous years.

“We are very grateful for the way the community pulled together in order to achieve this challenge, even going above and beyond,” said Trudy Lockyer, Campus Store director. “No words can properly express how appreciative we are of everyone’s efforts. It’s amazing what the Brock community can achieve when we all come together for a cause.”

Nancy McIntosh, Community Care’s community and development co-ordinator, noted that local families will have more to celebrate this Christmas because of Brock’s contribution to the toy drive.

“Please let everyone at Brock know to take a moment before they open any of their own gifts and think about someone who is having Christmas because of their thoughtfulness,” she said. “Each of you has made a world of difference to not only a child in need but to their parents, who wish for their children’s happiness.”

With the Adopt an Angel campaign wrapped up, the Campus Store has launched its latest holiday drive, this time in support of the Brock University Students’ Union’s (BUSU) food bank.

Faculty, staff and students are asked to drop off donations of non-perishable food items to the store during regular hours until Dec. 14.

Because of the limited space in the Collabratorium where the food bank is located on campus, any items that can’t be stored there will be donated to Community Care.

“We had heard of BUSU’s new venture with the Collabratorium and food bank and looked for any opportunity to help,” Lockyer said. “This seemed like a natural way to spread to some holiday cheer and support a couple of local charities at the same time.”
