A decade later, President’s Golf Tournament still supports student athletes

More than 144 golfers joined Brock University President Jack Lightstone at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ont., yesterday for the milestone tenth annual President’s Tournament in support of Brock Athletics.

This year’s event raised $75,000, all of which goes into awards and financial supports for the University’s student athletes. In the course of its first decade, the tournament has raised more than $800,000 to help Brock’s student athletes. Proceeds are raised through the golf fees and also through important support from sponsors.

“Since day one, the tournament has been about helping to support our talented young student athletes,” said Tournament Chair David Howes, who is also Immediate Past Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees “It is also an opportunity to get the public involved in Brock and to reach out to the people of Niagara to be a part of what the University does in our community.”

Brock University has a rich tradition of athletic excellence. In its 45-year history, the Badgers have captured 29 national and 57 provincial championships in a wide variety of sports. Brock currently has teams in 26 varsity sports – 14 men’s and 12 women’s programs.

Lightstone thanked the participants for supporting dedicated athletes who excel not only in sport but also in academics.

“In addition, they are active members in the Niagara community,” said Lightstone. “Athletes who benefit from these awards maintain a high academic standing, all the while juggling athletics, studies, part-time jobs and volunteering.”

“As a student athlete, we are extremely grateful for the financial support we receive,” says Brock men’s hockey player Derek Brochu. “It allows us to put our energy and focus in both our athletics and academics. The money received truly impacts the success we are able to achieve.”

The Presenting Sponsor of this year’s tournament was Sodexo.
