Part of St. Catharines will be a little greener this week thanks to a tree-planting project on Brock University lands.

With the help of TD employees and Land Care Niagara, 250 native trees will be planted at Brock University at 140 Lockhart Drive. The planting will happen on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The trees will eventually blend with the mixed hardwood forest surrounding the property, said John Dick, manager of Grounds Services with Facilities Management. There used to be a house on the site, but the building has been razed.

“We had this site, and we thought ‘What are we going to do with it?’” Dick said. “We decided the best thing to do was to plant trees that will eventually match the surrounding forest lands.”

The trees are coming from Land Care Niagara, and the morning planting event is organized by the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. TD volunteers will plant trees alongside Brock student volunteers.

The planting is part of TD Tree Days, which hosts more than 80 tree-planting events across the country over three weekends in September.

Through TD Tree Days, more than 5,000 volunteers will add 28,000 native trees to Canada’s urban and rural forests. The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation supports a wide range of environmental initiatives through their grant program, including wildlife rehabilitation, conservation and recycling initiatives and urban renewal.
